EMT, taxi passenger injured in ambulance collision

Witnesses say the taxi driver ran a red light and hit an ambulance; the impact sent both vehicles into a concrete traffic island

PHILADELPHIA — The passenger of a taxi is in critical condition, and an EMS worker and the taxi driver were both injured Tuesday morning when the cab collided with an ambulance.

Witnesses told NBC10.com that the City Cab Company taxi ran a red light and hit a Jefferson LifeStar ambulance just off Interstate 676 near Franklin Square.

Both vehicles crashed into a concrete island, and the ambulance’s front end was completely smashed. The front driver’s side of the taxi was also damaged, and a traffic signal was destroyed by the impact.

The EMS worker suffered a leg injury, and the taxi driver had cuts and bruises. The passenger, a man in his 40s, was critically injured. All were taken to Jefferson University Hospital, and the accident is under investigation.
