JUPITER, Fla. — Police say the driver of a car involved in a crash that killed two paramedics was driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Palm Beach Post reported that a preliminary investigation identified Genero Ajqui as the driver whose car crashed into an ambulance and killed Lahiri Garcia, 51, and Paul Besaw, 36.

“It’s ridiculous that someone with so little regard for human life, who would get behind the wheel when they were drunk, would take the life of a person like Paul,” Besaw’s wife, Dawn, said. “My husband saved so many lives. It makes no sense. What am I going to tell Allison?”

According to the traffic crash report, Ajqui made a U-turn directly in front of the ambulance and failed to yield.

Charges of driving under the influence of alcohol are pending.
