MARCO ISLAND, Fla. — Despite being found among the mangled metal of a red Jeep Cherokee and guardrail on Sunday morning, the driver of the vehicle that flipped on a Marco Island bridge was listed in fair condition late Monday.
Andrew Roach, 40, of Marco Island, flipped his Jeep on the Smokehouse Bay Bridge shortly before 1 a.m. on Sunday, Marco Island Police Capt. Dave Baer said in a prepared statement released Monday.
Lee Memorial Health System spokeswoman Pat Dolce said Roach’s vital signs are stable and within normal limits.
Roach was driving south on Collier Boulevard when his 1994 Jeep Cherokee left the road and struck the guardrail, Baer said.
After the impact, the vehicle overturned, causing the driver to be ejected, he said. Roach was airlifted to the trauma center at Lee Memorial Hospital with serious injuries, Baer said.
There was extensive damage to the guardrails on the bridge, said Marco Island Fire Rescue Chief Mike Murphy.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, Baer said.
