San Antonio Fire Department to try community paramedicine

Union opposes the move saying firefighters respond to emergencies, not make house calls

SAN ANTONIO — According to the San Antonio Fire Department last year, 286 callers of 911 were responsible for generating 4,083 responses, resulting in 2,430 hospital transports.

The callers cost the City of San Antonio $1.8 million dollars. To help cut down on chronic calls, San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood introduced the Mobile Integrated Healthcare Pilot program to City Council Tuesday afternoon.

As part of the program, five paramedics trained in community medicine will make home visits to the chronic 911 callers, making sure their health needs are being met.
