TAYLOR, Mich. — A man who allegedly stole an ambulance led police on a chase through multiple towns before officers were able to box him in and take him into custody.

Melvindale Police Chief Dan Jones said a man in Taylor, Michigan, reportedly got into Superior Ambulance Service rig and took off while the EMS crew was inside a convenience store, 7 ABC reported.

Police pursued the man in the ambulance through multiple cities – from Taylor to Southgate to Detroit to Melvindale, where the pursuit ended near the Dearborn city limits.

Police attempted to box the ambulance and the driver with their cars, but the man used the ambulance to ram several of the police cruisers, injuring several officers.

According to 7 Action News, one police officer was close to being crushed, and another sprained a knee.

“All the police cars swarmed around him,” motorist Michell Redder said after watching the scene from her car. “He rammed into the police cars (and) knocked one down. Something needs to be done about it. He could’ve killed somebody.”

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
