VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — An ambulance driver was charged with reckless driving after a crash Friday that left one woman injured, said Margie Long, a police spokeswoman.

Matthew Degrave, 22, of the 1500 block of Amberley Forest Road, was issued a summons just before 10 p.m. Wednesday after an investigation.

The collision occurred about 6:22 p.m. Friday at the intersection of North Witchduck Road and Jericho Road, Long said.

Degrave was driving a Virginia Beach Emergency Medical Services ambulance north in the 4800 block of North Witchduck when he approached a red light.

The ambulance, which was running with its emergency lights and siren on, headed into the intersection, where it struck the driver’s side door of a 2006 Ford Focus, Long said. The woman who was driving the car was treated and released from a local hospital. Degrave was not hurt.

Long said the investigation is continuing.
