GLASGOW, Scotland — A paramedic on a 999 call knocked down and killed a disabled OAP as he crossed at the green man.
At the High Court in Glasgow yesterday, 56-year-old Campbell Fisher admitted causing the death of Robert Cunningham by careless driving on November 19, 2010.
He had been charged with causing death by dangerous driving but the Crown accepted his guilty plea to the reduced charge.
The court heard Fisher, in an ambulance service rapid response car, was on his way to attend a man with chest pain, when the incident occurred at Prestwick Road, Ayr, Police estimated the speed of Fisher’s vehicle before braking as being 46mph and stated: “The blame for this collision must lie entirely with the accused.”
Seconds after he hit Mr Cunningham, Fisher tried to resuscitate him without success.
He told the police: “He just walked out in front of me, I didn’t see him.”
Mr Cunningham, 70, suffered numerous fractures to limbs and the spinal column.
The court heard Mr Cunningham, who had mild cerebral palsy, lived in supported accommodation in Ayr.
Judge Lady Stace deferred sentence on Fisher, of Dalmellington, Ayrshire, until next month and banned him from driving in the meantime.
