BISMARCK, N.D. — The North Dakota EMS Association released the results of its North Dakota Rural EMS Counts lights and sirens survey this week.

“The North Dakota EMS Association has done an important service to their members by collecting this data on perceptions about the effect and impact of red lights and sirens,” Greg Friese, MS, NRP, EMS1 editorial director said. “They’ve set the stage for delivering education to their members to reduce the use of red lights and sirens, and measure the impact of that training.”

The survey questions address lights and siren use with regard to response times, patient outcomes, collision risks, transport time and billing.

In the 2022 EMS Trend Survey, 77% of respondents believe that in general, the use of lights and sirens increases risk, yet 62% of respondents still report responding with lights and sirens very often (46%) or always (16%).
