CARLSTADT, N.J. — State police reopened the northbound western spur of the turnpike Tuesday after crews completed emergency construction and cleanup from a tanker fire that injured nine on Monday, authorities said.

The tanker was carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline when it exploded in towering flames on Route 95 northbound, forcing authorities to shut down the western spur of the turnpike just before 9 p.m.

One of the injured people, who was in a minivan, sustained moderate injuries and was treated at Hackensack University Medical Center, state police said. The person was not immediately identified. The tanker driver was not injured, state police said.

Authorities said the tanker exploded near Exit 18W of the turnpike, not far from Route 3.

Firefighters from Carlstadt and from all surrounding communities responded, Carlstadt police said.

The southbound lane of the western spur was reopened around 10:30 p.m., state police said.

Engineers from the state Department of Transportation were at the scene late Monday to inspect for any roadway damage, said Tom Feeney, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.
