CHICAGO — Four northwest suburban teens who had just attended a seat belt awareness presentation at school were involved in a head-on collision on the way home — and walked away unhurt because of their seat belts.
The car with the Prospect High School students crashed 17 minutes after classes were dismissed on Oct. 6.
An 83-year-old driver was cited for failure to yield the right of way, police said.
Mount Prospect police officers had just presented the department’s seat belt awareness program at the school. The students got coupons to Culver’s for buckling up.
Officers still at the school went out to the crash — and found all four students were buckled in, despite their car being the most damaged in the accident.
“Had this program not been in place to reinforce the importance of wearing seat belts for these young adults, the outcome of the traffic crash might have been much worse,” Traffic Unit Sgt. Mike Eterno said.
