RED WING, Minn. — The death of a woman during a medical transport from Red Wing to Minneapolis just over a month ago is the subject of an ongoing investigation. The incident is believed to have been caused by an equipment malfunction, according to Red Wing Fire Chief Tom Schneider, but it remains a delicate situation.
After the April 22 incident, the ambulance was immediately taken out of service and sent to Florida for testing. The problem — the on-board oxygen system spontaneously shut off — was able to be duplicated prior to new electronic components being installed, which was believed to have fixed the issue. The vehicle was put back into operation in early May.
It soon encountered further problems. While making another transport on May 25, the on-board oxygen system again spontaneously shut down. That patient did not experience any serious effects, however, thanks to a portable oxygen system being made standard on all fire department ambulances after the initial problem.
