GLOUCESTER, Mass. — The Gloucester Fire Department is mourning one of its own after the death of 57-year-old Firefighter Sander Schultz, a member of the department for nearly three decades.

Schultz died unexpectedly on Saturday, Mayor Greg Verga and Fire Chief Eric Smith said in a joint statement. A 26-year veteran of the department, Schultz served as EMS coordinator for “many years” before he became the driver of Engine 2 in West Gloucester.

Flags will fly half-staff to honor Schultz’s long-time service to the community.

The fire department said it would provide information on services determined by Schultz’s family in the coming days.

“The Gloucester Fire Department asks for the family’s privacy to be respected during this difficult time,” the statement reads.

The statement did not list a cause of death for Schultz.
