SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain — The driver of the train that crashed Wednesday in Spain, killing at least 80 people, had previously posted an image of the train’s speedometer on Facebook boasting about how fast he was going.
Francisco Jose Garzón Amo posted the image months before Wednesday’s crash. In response to the photo, one of Amo’s Facebook friends wrote, “Whoa you are going so fast, braaaaaaake,” to which he replied that “If I went any faster, they’d fine me.” In another post, he wrote, “It would be amazing to go alongside police and overtake them and trigger off the speed camera.”
The crash was Spain’s worst rail disaster in nearly 70 years. The cause has been attributed to the fact that the train may have been traveling at twice the speed limit for that stretch of track, which is 80 km/h.
He escaped with only light wounds in the crash, which injured more than 130 in addition to the 80 confirmed fatalities.
