PGA Golfer aims for title after health scare

Charlie Beljan had trouble breathing and thought he was going to die

WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Charlie Beljan had trouble breathing even before he teed off, called for paramedics when he made the turn and even told his caddie at one point Friday that he thought he might die.

Beljan kept right on playing until he had a remarkable 8-under 64 to build a three-shot lead going into the weekend at the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Moments after signing his card, Beljan was loaded onto a stretcher and wheeled to an ambulance.

Madison’s Jerry Kelly shot a second-round 68 and sits in a tie for 30th at 5-under 139. Kelly is ranked 137th on the money list and needs to move up 12 spots to retain fully-exempt status on the PGA Tour.

He does have a one-time career money exemption if needed - he ranks 25th in career earnings with more than $23.7 million - but he’d rather not have to use it.
