OAK BLUFFS, Mass — A Mass. paramedic has resigned after allegations that he stole morphine and replaced it with saline solution as a cover-up.
Oak Bluffs paramedic Tony White, 45, admitted to police that he uses morphine, is addicted to opiates and was seeking treatment, according to the Martha’s Vineyards Times.
White reportedly had been filling a shift for the Edgartown emergency medical service when he allegedly stole the drugs.
A police report said that the Edgartown deputy fire chief, who manages the ambulance department, grew suspicious of White after inventory was missing from an ambulance that White had been driving.
White presented a syringe with a broken seal and clear liquid inside when questioned, but the fire chief, knowing of speculations that White had substance abuse issues, had the liquid tested and confirmed it was saline.
The investigation into the matter is still ongoing. White may face up to 10 years in state prison if found guilty.
