WHITE OAK, Pa. — An EMT was diagnosed with a rare heart condition after suffering a health scare while on a call.
WTAE reported that White Oak EMS EMT Shawn Betts was on a call helping a woman who had fallen when he experienced a life-threatening rapid heart rate due to supraventricular tachycardia, which is caused by abnormal electrical activity in the heart.
After being transported to the hospital, Betts was diagnosed with a rare heart condition and must undergo a cardiac ablation to correct the abnormal electrical signals in his heart.
The operation will require Betts to take three months of unpaid leave from work, and a GoFundMe has been set up to help with medical bills.
