SMITHTOWN, N.Y. — A fire chief driving a fire department SUV was airlifted after being involved in a car crash Thursday.
7Online.com reported that the Stonybrook (N.Y.) Fire Department chief was driving an SUV which crashed into a civilian vehicle at an intersection. The impact flipped the fire department car and trapped the chief inside, as well as two people inside a sedan.
The male driver and female passenger were both taken to a hospital; the driver has non-life threatening injuries and the woman has serious injuries. The fire chief’s condition is unknown.
Fire crews worked for nearly 30 minutes to cut all of the victims out of the vehicles. The chief was airlifted to a hospital, while the two other victims were rushed by ambulance.
It is unclear if the fire vehicle was responding to an emergency. The crash is under investigation.
