Mysterious smell at Los Angeles clinic sickens 18

A hazardous materials team searched the clinic and some surrounding buildings

LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles fire officials say a mysterious odor at a downtown medical clinic has sent 17 people to the hospital.

Fire spokesman Erik Scott says the unusual odor was reported about 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Eisner Pediatric and Family Medical Clinic on Olive Street.

Eighteen people — mostly inside the clinic — complained of nausea or other symptoms. Scott says 17 were sent to local hospitals for evaluation and one was treated at the scene.

Scott says all suffered from general nausea and weakness, but their ailments were mild and not life-threatening.

Scott says a hazardous materials team searched the clinic and some surrounding buildings but found nothing dangerous that might have caused the odor.
