NEW YORK — Sure, they’re baseball rivals—but EMTs from Boston showed Saturday that they’re good friends, too.
To honor slain Bronx EMT Yadira Arroyo in 2017, the city of Boston retired her EMT badge number, 2017.
“Our solidarity with our fellow Emergency Medical personnel from New York City is unwavering,” says a certificate signed by Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, the city’s EMS chief, James Hooley, and Boston EMT union chief Michael MacNeil.
“Its a great honor for our entire FDNY family, and wonderful what Boston did for our beloved Yadira, whose death impacted the entire nation,” said EMS Local 2507 union head Oren Barzilay.
Arroyo died in March 2017 when career criminal Jose Gonzalez hijacked her ambulance and ran her over, authorities say. Gonzalez, charged with murder, is pursuing a psychiatric defense.
Arroyo, 44, had been an EMT for 14 years. She left behind five sons.
The certificate was presented in the Bronx on Saturday at an annual softball game between EMT teams from New York and Boston. New York won, 12-7.
