SAN JOSE, Calif. — An adult man was hit and killed by an ambulance early Saturday morning on San Jose’s McKee Road near El Ranch Verde Drive, the city’s police department said in a news release.

Officers responded just before 5 a.m. to the incident. According to a preliminary investigation, the victim was lying down on McKee Road outside of a crosswalk when he was hit by an ambulance traveling east. The ambulance was driving normally, without its lights or sirens activated, and without a patient during the incident.

The driver of the original ambulance is cooperating with the investigation, according to the San Jose Police Department news release. The incident took place close to the Regional Medical Center and led to the temporary closure of McKee Road from Checkers Drive through North Jackson Avenue.
