ELWOOD, Ill. — Despite the efforts of a good Samaritan who performed CPR, an 8-year-old girl died when her family’s van was struck by a semi in Elwood shortly after they left a restaurant, police said.
Madison Frost was unconscious and unresponsive when a driver pulled up to the crash and performed CPR until paramedics arrived, according to Elwood Police Chief Fred Hayes. Madison was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where she died, Hayes said.
Her 15-year-old sister, Maria, suffered a fractured pelvis, broken ribs and a punctured lung, Hayes said. He was also taken Presence Saint Joseph, then transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was listed in critical condition, he said.
“It is tragic,’’ Hayes said.
The girls, their parents and two family friends had just eaten dinner at a Silver Dollar restaurant nearby Monday evening, Hayes said.
The girls’ mother, Tina Frost, 36, was driving a 2010 Dodge Caravan, carrying her daughters and the two family friends, Hayes said. The girls’ father, Christopher Frost, was driving a pickup driving behind them.
Tina Frost made a left turn onto Mississippi Avenue from Illinois Route 53 when a semi traveling north on 53 hit the Caravan on its rear passenger side, Hayes said.
“Preliminary indications are that Tina Frost pulled out from the stop sign and into the path of the semi truck,’’ Hayes said.
Madison had been sitting in the third row seat of the Caravan, which bore the brunt of the impact, he said.
Tina Frost was treated at a hospital and released. The two family friends were taken to Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, where one of them remained this morning, Hayes said.
The driver of the semi was not injured and was not cited.
