XINXIANG CITY, China — A woman’s husband tried to retrieve his wife’s new cell phone after she dropped it into an open pit toilet, but knee-deep in sewage, he lost consciousness due to the smell, FOX News reports.
The husband’s mother then jumped in rescue him, but also fainted. She was followed by the woman who dropped the phone, her father-in-law and two neighbors, who all suffered the same fate.
The six of them were rescued by neighbors who lowered a rope into the pit. The woman’s husband and mother-in-law died at the hospital. Two others were also hospitalized.
