MAYVILLE, N.Y. — Sheriff’s deputies in one New York town are taking an extra step to keep their community safe.
GoErie.com reported Chautauqua County Sheriff Joseph Gerace is launching a new program to train deputies as EMTs so they will be able to assist those in need of medical attention until EMS providers arrive.
“This will really assist the local volunteer fire service with response. Sometimes, because we are already on the road, we can be there quickly and at times when EMTs might be less available,” Gerace said.
Deputies will be equipped with a trauma bag and will report in as EMTs when they are on duty.
“We’re not replacing, we’re augmenting the existing system,” Gerace said.
Group training for the deputies will begin at the end of March and run through July.
“My goal is to eventually get as many deputies trained as EMTs as possible,” Gerace said.
