NAEMSE Award for Outstanding Educator

The Award: This award is given to educators across the globe and recognizes them for their excellence in EMS education. Nominees may or may not be NAEMSE members and may or may not be known outside of their sphere of influence. The purpose of this award is to recognize those unsung men and women who serve our profession each and every day with a commitment to excellence and reflect the very best characteristics of our profession in and out of the classroom.

Eligibility: Nominations may be made by any member in the EMS profession except for those members serving on the NAEMSE “Who is Who Committee."Nominees must have taught for a minimum of seven years and be in good standing with all state, national and international regulatory bodies within the EMS profession.

Nomination Process: A nomination package must include the following: a brief biographical sketch of the candidate, a letter of support from the person nominating the candidate to be considered and supporting letters from students, colleagues and/or peers. It is strongly recommended that the supporting letters be written by persons other than the nominee.

The nomination may be sent through the mail or electronically to NAEMSE, Foster Plaza 6, 681 Anderson Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15220-2766, attention: Who is Who in EMS Education: Legends That Walk Among Us. E-mail: naemse.org.

Nominations must be received and postmarked no later than July 31, 2006. Any submissions received after the deadline will not be accepted. It is the responsibility of the sender to ensure the nominations arrives no later than the submission deadline date. Nominations will not be accepted via fax.

Evaluation Criteria

1. Teaching Quality Assessment - The degree to which the nominee clearly demonstrates past, current and continuous excellence in teaching, as indicated by formal student and peer evaluations. Possesses self confidence and creates a sense of harmony between self and students.

2. Philosophy of Teaching and Teaching Methodology - The degree to which the nominee: (a) challenges students to go beyond the written curriculum and explore their profession in thought provoking and humanistic ways, (b) demonstrates outstanding competence and integrity in managing the teaching and learning process, (c) creates a student-centered environment where the student is not a passive but rather, an active participant in the learning process and (d) demonstrates an intense enthusiasm for the subject matter and the profession as a whole which motivates students to their fullest capacity.

3. Service to the Teaching Profession - The degree to which the nominee provides leadership in the EMS educational field at a local, regional, state, national, and international level.

4. Service to Students – Serves as a mentor to students and provides time in and outside the classroom to facilitate their success. Inspires students to become leaders and vehicles of change in innovative and challenging ways.

5. Professional Growth and Competencies Development - The degree to which the nominee’s professional competence is evidenced by continuing intellectual improvement. Attending conferences, participating in local, state, regional. international educational committees and activities.

6. Endorsement by Colleagues and Students - The degree to which statements substantiate the nominee’s excellence in and dedication to the teaching role. Include statements from: (a) the administrator of the college or department (b) former student, and (c) a colleague
