DOVER, Del. — A manufacturer’s defect is delaying delivery of a new life-saving tool that paramedics statewide say they need.

For the past several months, county paramedics have been awaiting the arrival of the CAREvent ALS+CPAP venti-lator, a device designed to aid patients who have trouble breathing on their own because of an injury. Depending on the severity of the injury, it can either help air into the lungs by way of a face mask or can be used to place a tube down a victim’s throat.

The device is supposed to replace an older model that paramedics in New Castle County have been using for about 10 years and had been hoping to phase out, officials said.
