MIAMI — Imagine you’re out one night and a woman has a seizure. In front of her another woman has an asthma attack. Minutes later someone is stabbed, and the stabber has a panic attack. You may have no idea what to do, but you sure hope the paramedics will.

None of this is real, but it’s the mock emergency scene nearly 20 teams of paramedics responded to in the ninth annual Randy Boaz Memorial Advanced Life Support Competition on June 16. Teams of paramedics from Mexico City and Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties gathered at Miami Dade College Medical Center Campus to try their hands at responding to an unknown, extreme medical emergency in 12 minutes.

This year’s scenario was set in a male strip club, complete with blaring rap music, male dancers and a smoke machine. Student and professor volunteers from Miami Dade College played the victims, bouncers and club goers. It was the paramedics’ job to stay focused and perform their skills.
