WILEY FORD, W.Va. — A Maryland State Police Medevac Trooper 5 crew was all set for night training when it was alerted to help 12 people stranded in the raging Shenandoah River late Sunday.

“We were ready to begin night training and ready to roll when we were called for a river rescue. The details were sketchy initially,” said Tfc. Larry Levasseur, a paramedic for the past three decades who has been a member of the state police Aviation Division since 1993.

After Cumberland Fire Department Helicopter Emergency Aerial (HEAT) team members Lt. Sam Wilson and Firefighter/EMT Ed Kenner boarded the helicopter, Pilot Scott Russell flew Trooper 5 to Harpers Ferry. Training Pilot Chris Pysz was also on board.
