YORK COUNTY, Pa. — The York County Bar Association has partnered with Leave a Legacy of York County to provide free wills and estate planning documents to emergency responders during a free event.
According to the website for Wills for Heroes, a nonprofit organization that provides free estate documents to police, fire and ambulance personnel, nearly 90 percent of first responders don’t have wills.
In order to meet this need, a Wills for Heroes event will be 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 18, at the United Way of York County in York.
The event is open to police, ambulance and fire personnel from York Area United Fire and Rescue and Spring Garden, Springettsbury and York townships.
“The ultimate goal is to service all regions in York County,” said Mac Brillhart of Stock and Leader Attorneys at Law. “We’re going to have other events and other opportunities for more townships and municipalities.”
An event for the York responders is being planned for November.
During Wills for Heroes, responders will be able to sit down with volunteering attorneys from the York County Bar Association and York County Paralegal Associates.
“Everyone should leave with a will, a power of attorney and a living will,” Brillhart said.
Registration forms are available through administrators with the selected emergency offices. The deadline to register for an hour-long session is Sept. 13.
Brillhart said Tuesday that nine of the 48 appointment slots were still available.
Wills for Heroes was founded after 9/11 when South Carolina lawyer Anthony Hayes wanted to do something to help the men and women who responded to the terrorist attack.
The Pennsylvania Bar Association Young Lawyers division adopted the program as a statewide service in spring 2009.
