MCSHERRYSTOWN, Pa. — McSherrystown Borough’s newly placed disaster warning siren should soon be operational.
At Wednesday night’s borough meeting, Councilman Joseph VonSas said the installation of the siren is complete and the siren is in need of only a “decoder reset” by the county.
The reset will see to it that the siren, which is near many residences, will be silenced between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. to protect residents’ sleep, VonSas said.
The siren’s disaster alert emergency management mode will be operational 24 hours a day.
The borough began the siren’s reinstallation in September at the McSherrystown public works department on Oak Lane, on the borough’s western boundary.
The warning siren is a three-phase unit which has been protecting the municipality for decades at McSherrystown Fire Co. Station 1. At its new location, the siren will easily be heard from hundreds of Conewago residences.
Just as it did in its previous location, the siren will sound frequent short tones for fire and ambulance calls.
But a long constant wail will notify residents of an imminent danger from which they must seek cover immediately.
After residents have safely taken cover, borough officials said, they are advised to tune their radios to a local station to receive more information on a pending crisis.
