New medical response policy saves FD 83 runs in 1 month

The fire department is called out only when a patient is in a life-threatening or critical condition

PORT HURON, Mich. — Port Huron firefighters responded to 83 fewer medical calls from June 15 to July 13 than they did during the same time period the previous year.

Administrators hope the decrease in medical runs — a result of a new medical response policy — will lead to cost savings. Public Safety Director Michael Reaves said it is much too early to tell. “I’m satisfied that we’re getting good information, but I want to look at the long-term results,” Reaves said.

In June, administrators implemented a policy limiting the number of medical calls firefighters respond to. Instead of running to every medical call, the fire department is called out only when a patient is in a life-threatening or critical condition.
