Driver killed after crash with Ky. ambulance

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. — A woman from Vine Grove, Ky., was killed last night when the car she was riding in collided with an ambulance in Elizabethtown.

The crash happened shortly before 11 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 31 and Pine Valley Drive, according to Elizabethtown police. Witnesses told police an ambulance traveling south on U.S. 31 had a green light when it struck a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix.

Katrina A. Polston, 27, a passenger in the Pontiac, died at the scene. Another passenger, 25-year-old Brandie L. Benningfield of Elizabethtown, was taken to University Hospital in Louisville, where she was listed in critical condition this morning.

The driver of the ambulance was Jason S. Thompson, 29, of Louisville. Thompson and a patient, Roy Frazier of Leitchfield, were taken to Hardin Memorial Hospital.

A third person in the ambulance, paramedic Carl D. Akin III of Louisville, was taken to University Hospital. No information was immediately available on the medical condition of the three ambulance occupants.

The Pontiac’s driver, Anthony W. Benningfield, 28, also of Elizabethtown, was charged with reckless homicide, wanton endangerment and driving under the influence. He was being held at the Hardin County Detention Center.
