GUILFORD, Conn. — Defibtech, manufacturer of the award-winning, price- and performance-leading Lifeline(TM) and ReviveR(TM) brand automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and training products, announced that its entire line of AEDs and AED Trainers can be upgraded in the field to meet the new American Heart Association (AHA) Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC). Defibtech products will also meet the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) Guidelines for Resuscitation 2005. Every Defibtech Rescue AED or Training AED ever made can be easily upgraded.
Defibtech will be making free upgrade software available to its customers through its distributor partners in the near future. “From the very beginning, when we were designing our AEDs and trainers, we anticipated that rescue protocols might change someday,” said Defibtech President Gintaras Vaisnys. “Consistent with our goal of bringing practical real-world value to our customers, we planned ahead and designed all of our products so that they could easily be upgraded without taking them out of service.” The Defibtech upgrade process can be done in less than a minute at the very location where the AED is deployed. This means that for any future changes to protocol recommendations, whether they be later this year or five years from now, Defibtech AED owners will be able to upgrade their AEDs and training products using this same simple process. Conversely, many competing AED brands require custom cables, computers with IRDA ports, field service calls or sending the AED back to the manufacturer to upgrade their units, often for an additional cost.
Defibtech’s innovative real-world feature set, including unparalleled field upgrade capability, active status indication and the industry’s longest battery life, has resulted in numerous large-scale deployments and awards. Defibtech AEDs were chosen for deployment in the 2006 Winter Olympics, were selected by the State of New Jersey for deployment in police and fire vehicles (over 3,000 units), and have been the choice for numerous large-scale government and commercial deployments. Defibtech’s AEDs have also been recognized with a number of design awards and were even selected for exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. AEDs revive victims of sudden cardiac arrest caused by ventricular fibrillation. Health experts estimate that sudden cardiac arrest kills about 400,000 people in the United States and millions of people worldwide each year. Studies show that if victims are defibrillated within a minute or two after arrest, more than 70 percent survive. If defibrillation is delayed for more than 10 minutes, less than 5 percent live, making immediate access to AEDs vital.
