Calif. supervisors mull reward for ambulance transport information

Medical center officials say data suggests something is causing ambulances to choose other hospitals

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Rumors that someone is wooing local ambulances away from Kern Medical Center — and costing the county-run hospital half a million dollars a month in the process — prompted new ideas and a measure of caution from Kern officials Monday.

Gathered for a meeting at KMC, county supervisors considered posting a cash reward for information about the alleged wrongdoing. But when the board’s legal counsel questioned its authority to do that, the supervisors discussed asking KMC’s nonprofit foundation to offer a flat-screen television in hopes of gathering tips that would lead to a culprit.

Officials say they have no proof that anyone is illegally redirecting ambulances to other hospitals by using enticements such as money, gifts or meals. But they point to data suggesting that something is causing ambulances to choose other hospitals over KMC.
