SPOKANE, Wash. — A former EMT helped save a gunshot victim when he heard gunshots a block away.

KHQ reported that the man, who wished to remain anonymous, was exiting a business when he heard the gunshots and saw people scatter.

“Ended up kneeling down by the guy’s chest,” the former EMT said. “He had very shallow breaths so I was there to prepare for CPR if needed.”

The man told police officers he used to be an EMT, so they gave him a pair of gloves and he got to work monitoring his breathing while police and firefighters worked on the victim as well.

“It was good seeing the life come back into him,” he said. “The police are the ones who saved his life. They’re the ones who got there, put the tourniquet on him. They’re the true heroes and the firefighters.”

The victim was transported to the hospital and is expected to survive.
