INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Police said they arrested a man after he recklessly discharged a shotgun, endangering IEMS personnel.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) said that at roughly 5:30 p.m. Monday, police and the Indianapolis EMS (IEMS) were dispatched to the 1700 block of Sparrow Avenue on a report of a disturbance.

IMPD said IEMS personnel had just arrived and were preparing to give medical aid to an involved injured party when suddenly, workers said they heard a gunshot coming from an unknown direction. IEMS workers took cover as officers arrived, and IMPD said those officers immediately secured the area and ensured that no one was injured.

IMPD said officers believe the other half of the originally reported disturbance was most likely for firing the shot, and they began searching the area.

The suspect was identified to police as Thomas Calaway, 40, of Indianapolis. IMPD said officers were able to establish Calaway was hiding in a nearby house, located at 3445 S. Walcott St.

Officers surrounded the house and ordered the suspect to surrender, which he did after a short period of time.

IMPD said officers found the shotgun believed to have been used to fire the earlier shot.

Investigators said Calaway is being questioned by detectives and is expected to face a preliminary charge of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, a Class D felony.

The attached booking photo of Calaway is from an unrelated incident, according to IMPD.
