Alleged kidnapping suspect assaults paramedic who stopped to help

Police said AMR paramedics saw Clarence Pate assaulting a woman in a vehicle, and one was assaulted by Pate after getting out to help

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A paramedic who tried to help a kidnapping and assault victim was assaulted himself by the suspect.

Police said Clarence Pate flagged down the victim while she was driving on a highway, and got into her car, FOX21 News reported.

They continued down the highway until Pate became aggressive, police said. The victim pulled over and tried to get out of the car, but Pate restrained her.

The woman eventually was able to get out of the vehicle, but Pate then allegedly tried to throw her into traffic.

An AMR paramedic crew driving by saw the incident and stopped to help. One of the paramedics who got out to intervene was allegedly assaulted by Pate.

The paramedic and the victim suffered minor injuries.

Pate was arrested and charged with kidnapping, robbery and assault.
