Police officer waits more than 20 minutes for D.C. ambulance

A police officer eventually cancelled the ambulance and took his colleague to a hospital in his squad car

WASHINGTON D.C. — A police officer drove an injured colleague to a hospital after waiting 20 minutes for an ambulance, and cancelling the call before it arrived.

The officer was injured shortly after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday after making an arrest. Wanda Gattison, spokeswoman for the Office of Unified Communications which runs the D.C. 911 center, confirmed to the Washington Post that an ambulance was requested at 6:30 p.m., but all units were busy.

A fire spokeswoman told the Post that the injured officer was treated by a firefighter who arrived on the scene within minutes. A supervisor also arrived on the scene at 7:09 p.m., but by that time the police officer had taken his colleague to the hospital in a squad car.

Injuries were described as minor.
