MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A flight paramedic was on his way to work when he helped save the life of a bus driver while at a stoplight.
Charles Longley was waiting for a light to change after missing an exit when a woman knocked on his window and heard the horn of a school bus behind him; he quickly contacted dispatch for assistance.
Longley found the bus driver slumped over the steering wheel; the driver had a weak pulse and was blue and unresponsive, reported the Herald Mail Media. Using a pocket mask given to him by a police officer, Longley performed rescue breaths. After 15 minutes, the driver regained consciousness and began breathing. He was transported to the hospital for treatment.
“Who knows what would have happened if I hadn’t passed the exit by mistake, turned around and stopped for doughnuts on my way to work,” Longley said. “Everything happens for a reason.”
