BISMARCK, N.D. — North Dakota’s House has endorsed limits on the public disclosure of recordings of 911 emergency calls.
The bill would prevent North Dakota broadcasters from playing audio of 911 calls unless the recordings were disclosed by a dispatch center.
Representatives voted 78-16 on Thursday to approve the restrictions. The bill now goes to the state Senate.
The bill lets public agencies decide whether to disclose 911 recordings. An agency would have to provide a written transcript on request.
Williston Rep. Patrick Hatlestad says the proposed law would allow people to listen to 911 recordings. But they would not be allowed to copy or record them without permission.
North Dakota broadcasters and newspapers opposed the bill. They said the restrictions were unnecessary.
