UPPER TOWNSHIP, N.J. — State police say a teenage driver struck and seriously injured a 14-year-old girl as she crossed a highway to board a school bus.
The accident in Upper Township was reported around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday.
A preliminary investigation determined the bus was stopped in the northbound lane of Route 9 with its stop sign extended and flashing red lights activated. Authorities also say the girl was legally crossing the road.
State police say the 17-year-old boy who was driving a car southbound on the roadway failed to stop in time and struck the victim. She was being treated at a hospital for undisclosed injuries.
The driver and his 15-year-old female passenger were not injured.
No charges have been filed so far. But authorities say the accident remains under investigation.
