GARY, Ind. — Three children were killed and at least one person was injured late Friday in an apartment fire in Gary, officials said.
Mark Jones, chief of operations for the Gary Fire Department, said the fire started about 11:25 p.m. Friday in an apartment in the 4400 block of West 23rd Court.
Three people, who Jones described as young children, died in the fire. He did not yet have information about the children’s exact ages or names. At least one other person who was inside the apartment was taken to a Northwest Indiana hospital.
Jones said the fire was contained to the apartment where the children were, though residents living in nearby apartments were evacuated as a precaution.
Officials are still investigating the cause and origin of the fire, Jones said.
