DERBY, England — A Derby paramedic visited Houses of Parliament to help raise awareness of undetected heart conditions. Gareth Mallon represented the East Midlands Ambulance Service at Westminster, when he attended the Cardiac Risk In The Young parliamentary reception.
The 44-year-old became interested in sudden adult death syndrome after treating a patient with a heart condition that had gone unnoticed.
He became a member of the charity, which campaigns for better heart screening, and put together a training package for ambulance service staff.
This includes an hour-long DVD which has attracting interest from both his own colleagues and staff at the London Ambulance Service. Mr Mallon, of Alvaston, said: “I met some very important people and learned a lot from the experience. It was very educational.
“I also think people were impressed the East Midlands Ambulance Service was being represented and the progress we have made within the service.”
Mr Mallon, who attended the annual event last year, then attended a sports cardiology conference in London.
He said: “The conference was packed and both days were quite relentless but really helpful.
“They also showed me that what I’d been learning already was correct, which was quite reassuring.”
