BOSTON — Two EMS recruits who have yet to graduate delivered a baby in the back of a rig.
Brian Bailey and Alexandra Gallucci were sitting inside an EMS ambulance outside Boston Police Headquarters, waiting for their training supervisor, when a man came running up to them saying his wife in the back of his car having contractions, WCVB.com reports.
They notified dispatch, called their training officer who came running, loaded the woman into the back of the ambulance, and took off for the hospital. Gallucci drove while Bailey treated the patient.
“She said her contractions were about 30 seconds apart, so we knew the baby was coming,” Gallucci said. “She ended up giving birth as we were pulling into Brigham and Women’s. We made it into the ER bay and she delivered in the truck.”
Training Officer Felicia Mohammed assisted Bailey in the delivery, and said he and Gallucci did a great job under pressure. The mother and baby girl, who have not been identified, were said to be doing well.
“That’s something that’s going to be with me for the rest of my life, the first assist in the delivery of a baby,” Bailey said. “The training just automatically kicks in. It happens, instinct kicks in and you just revert back to everything you were taught.”
Bailey and Gallucci, along with their two dozen classmates, are set to graduate as Boston EMS members in May after six months of intensive training.
