HARTFORD, Conn. — City officials were joined by Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Rep. John Larson Wednesday to accept a federal grant on behalf of the fire department that they said will not only help firefighters save more lives but also better protect the firefighters themselves in the line of duty.

The $900,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency will allow the fire department to equip its firefighters with state of the art self-contained breathing and technical rescue equipment.

Fire Chief Carlos Huertas said that the members of his department were “ready and eager” to use the new equipment the grant would help purchase, which would allow firefighters to rescue victims quicker and more safely from cars, water and other dangerous terrain.
