READING, Penn. — A Centre Township woman was sentenced Wednesday to 15 months to three years in state prison for biting the hand of a paramedic who was helping to transport her to Reading Hospital.
Jacqueline I. Wein, 29, of the 300 block of Main Street was in tears before Judge Patrick T. Barrett as she entered a guilty plea to aggravated assault in the September 2016 case.
“I want to apologize to everyone involved,” Wein said. “I want to take this time to fix my life, so I don’t end up dead or in jail for the rest of my life.”
Assistant Public Defender Amber Moll said that Wein suffers from significant mental health and substance abuse issues. She said her client is a very intelligent woman when sober and is hopeful she can get treatment while in prison.
Wein received credit for 202 days and was sentenced to three years of probation to begin after her prison term.
According to authorities:
Wyomissing police responded to a home in the first block of Birchwood Road about 6 a.m. Sept. 18, 2016, for a domestic disturbance involving Wein and her grandmother.
Officers found Wein on their way to the home and a chase ensued, with Wein running through properties on Cherrywood and Cedarwood roads.
When police caught Wein, she claimed that she had been assaulted in Reading shortly before and needed medical assistance.
An ambulance was dispatched to the area, and Wein was taken to Reading Hospital.
While in the hospital parking lot, Wein bit a paramedic’s left index finger, leaving a mark.
Assistant District Attorney Daniel Troy said that the paramedic did not suffer from any serious injuries and was in agreement with the plea deal.
Troy said the plea agreement called for a mitigated sentence due to Wein’s mental health issues.
He said that Wein previously tried to get into the court’s mental health treatment court for the case but was denied.
