SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. — A woman was killed Thursday afternoon when she pulled out in front of an ambulance headed to an Indianapolis hospital, police said.

The crash happened just before 1:30 p.m. on U.S. 41 at County Road 300 North in Sullivan County.

State police said a Knox County EMS ambulance was traveling northbound on U.S. 41 when Deanna K. Mills, 66, of Hymera, failed to stop and was struck by the oncoming ambulance.

Mills was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the ambulance was headed to an Indianapolis hospital with a patient onboard, but not in emergency status, so its lights and sirens were not activated.

The patient — Gerald Coleman, 86, of Vincennes — suffered internal injuries in the crash and was airlifted to Methodist Hospital. Police did not say what his original condition was before the crash.

The driver, paramedic and nurse aboard the ambulance were taken to Sullivan County Community Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
