SHROPSHIRE — An ambulance rushing a crash victim to hos pital was involved in a fatal headon collision. Kieran Moore Hughes, 25, died when his blue Volkswagen Golf GTI smashed into the emergency vehicle on Thursday.
Witnesses claimed he was driving at speeds of up to 100mph to “impress his girlfriend”.
The force of the impact, on the A49 in Shropshire, left his car embedded in the ambu lance.
The Golf passenger, a woman in her 20s, had to be cut free and was airlifted to hospital in Stoke with serious head and chest injuries. Last night her condition was described as critical but stable.
The ambulance driver was trapped for two hours as firefighters cut her free and airlifted her to hospital in Bir mingham with head, leg and pelvis injuries.
The patient, already injured in a previous road accident, and the paramedic attending her, were taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
Eyewitness Darrel Vince, 48, said the car overtook him at speed. As it crashed, the car “just crumpled”. He added: “It looked like the guy was showing off to his girlfriend. He did not stand a chance.”
