TUNBRIDGE WELLS, U.K. — Ambulances are struggling to fight their way through the congestion chaos in Tunbridge Wells after roadworks began on Tuesday.
Work to resurface the road and install traffic lights is set to last seven weeks, and has been causing huge delays.
Ambulances have been spotted weaving through traffic on packed Pembury Road, the main route from the town to Tunbridge Wells Hospital.
Where the road turns into a one-way system, cars have been unable to move quickly enough to give them priority.
South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesman Rich Airey said it had not received reports of struggling ambulances, but warned drivers to be on the lookout for emergency vehicles during the roadworks.
The effect of the work has meant traffic has been backed up in other areas as motorists seek alternative routes, with London Road in Southborough bearing the brunt.
Alison Veale, of Notcutts Garden Centre in Tonbridge Road, Tunbridge Wells, could not believe the impact the works have had so quickly.
She said: “It took me 50 minutes to get to work today (Wednesday), usually it takes me 20 minutes.
“A customer came in yesterday and said she was stuck in Pembury Road for an hour and a half.
“Why has it got to take seven weeks? It’s a nightmare.”
