DARLINGTON, S.C. — Some Darlington County paramedics say they feel a county regulation which prohibits them from going over the speed limit may put the safety of residents at risk.
The rule, outlined for all county employees in a safety policy manual, states that departments other than the sheriff’s office involved in emergency response, “must insure that that their employees understand that they are not authorized to exceed the speed limits and when making an emergency response, must have the lights and siren activated.”
Some paramedics, speaking on condition of anonymity, said they fear that the rule may prevent them from reaching patients at a critical time and said they feel that they, like law enforcement, should be able to exceed the speed limit when necessary.
