WICHITA FALLS, Texas — An Archer City man is dead and three people were injured in a collision involving an Archer County ambulance and a car at the intersection of Eleventh and Holliday streets in Wichita Falls.

The wreck happened about 12:15 p.m. The impact knocked the ambulance on its side. Roy Lee Pope, 58, was declared dead at the scene. He had been the victim of a bee attack at the rear of a bank in Archer City a short time earlier.

Pope apparently had been seriously injured in the attack and was unconscious. Paramedics were working to revive him as the ambulance rushed to United Regional Hospital in Wichita Falls.

It was not clear Monday whether Pope died as a result of the bee attack or if the accident was a contributing factor.

The ambulance was traveling on Eleventh Street and was only a few blocks from the hospital when he crash happened. A police spokesperson said although traffic on the busy southbound Holliday Street had a green light, most vehicles yielded to the ambulance as it approached with lights and siren operating.

One car proceeded through the intersection and struck the emergency vehicle, the police spokesperson said. Two ambulance attendants and a woman driving the automobile were hurt in the crash, but their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

Emergency crews work to get victims out of an over turned Archer County ambulance at Eleventh and Holliday in Wichita Falls Monday. The patient in the wrecked ambulance was pronounced dead at the scene.
